Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to provide my credit card details on signup?

We require a credit card at signup as a measure to prevent fraudulent registrations.

This helps us ensure quality of service, since fraudulent registrations are frequently followed by outgoing spam, network attacks, and other malicious activity.

Please note that our shared hosting plans include an initial 2-week free trial period. You may see a pending charge on your credit card account shortly after signing up, but no funds will be taken until 14 days later.

There is no trial period for VPS and Dedicated hosting plans. You'll be charged immediately when signing up for either of those types of plans.

How does your free trial work?

When you sign up for a new shared hosting account, you immediately start a 14-day free trial subscription for the hosting service, followed by a paid monthly or yearly subscription.

When the 14 days have passed, we then automatically charge the card you provided on signup for the next monthly or yearly billing cycle.

After that, we'll automatically charge the card each billing cycle for as long as you continue to use the service.

If you decide that you would like to cancel the service before the trial expires, just contact us to let us know. We'll cancel the trial subscription and you won't be charged.

What are your terms of service, privacy policies, etc?

The following terms and policies are applicable to the use of the services provided by Opalstack LLC:

Why don't I have root/sudo access?

Customers on Opalstack's managed hosting service do not have root or sudo access to the servers that are hosting their sites. There are a few reasons for this:

  • Root access would allow a shared hosting customer to see files and data for other shared hosting customers on the server - this is would be a major concern for both privacy and security.
  • Root access on a managed VPS would make it easy for an inexperienced customer to interfere the server side of our management infrastructure.
  • Our dashboard handles tasks which typically require root access on an unmanaged service, such as modifying web server configuration, creating new shell users, and managing databases.

⁉️ But the internet said I needed root!

There are many "How to install X" tutorials online that mention the need to run commands as root or via sudo, but in practice most software can be installed within your home directory without root access. If you're attempting to install custom software and are having problems doing so without root access, please contact the Opalstack team for assistance and we'll help you get it done!

Where is MySQL?

MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL and is installed on all of our web servers.

If you have an application that needs a MySQL database, then you can create a MariaDB database and user with your dashboard and use that as your application's database.

What is Opalstack's backup policy?

We back up all servers daily (usually at around 11:00PM GMT).

Opalstack retains recent backups as follows:

  • The 3 most recent daily backups
  • The 2 most recent weekly backups
  • The 2 most recent monthly backups

Please contact the Opalstack support team if you need data recovered from your server's backups.

Please include the following information for the items you need recovered:

  • For files and directories: the original location of the file and/or directory
  • For databases: the type of database (MariaDB or PostgreSQL) and its name
  • For all items: the date from which the data should be recovered.

We'll attempt to recover your data from the backup nearest to, but not later than, that date.

Recovered data will be placed in an archive in your home directory on your server.

We do not guarantee the availability and integrity of our backups and very strongly recommend that customers maintain their own offsite backups of their data that would otherwise be irreplaceable in the event of a catastrophic system failure.
